Behind Queensland’s Words

Noosa Library Service recently celebrated Queensland Week through a week-long program, ‘Behind Queensland’s Words’.  This program promoted Queensland Week through the written word, both stories about Queensland and those written by Queensland authors. The program included a range of Queensland focused activities, events and displays, including a writers’ festival, the Books2U book fair and The Afterword Party.

The writers’ festival featured diverse high profile Queensland authors - Gregg Dreise, Benjamin Law and Annabelle Brayley. More than 250 people converged on Noosaville Library on Saturday 11 of June to listen to the authors tell their stories, and get a signed copy of their book.

The book fair showcased nine local authors who represented a mix of literary genres, subject matter and age groups who were set up in the library foyer “market style”. The authors said it was a great opportunity to promote their work, spend time mingling with each other, share stories and experiences and connect to other people in a field that can be largely isolating.

The day ended with a get together for the authors and attendees to celebrate over refreshments and music provided by local musician Andrea Kirwin. It was a chance to socialise and share the stories of the day in a relaxed environment.

“As an author, it was a great chance to meet other like minded people as well as members of the reading public. I have been to a number of literary events as both participant and organiser but this was one of the best I have ever attended!” (local participating author)

Noosa Library Service plays an important role by providing avenues for our community to become more aware of and appreciate Queensland’s rich culture of writers and literature. The festival highlighted the wealth of talent that Queensland has created, influenced and supported. This contributes to sustaining vibrant writing communities by raising the profiles of local authors and creating stronger connections with readers.

This program was made possible with the support of Queensland Government Queensland Week grant funding.
