Shortlisted writers announced for Write Stuff and Short Black

Shortlisted writers announced for Write Stuff and Short BlackSix writers have had screenplays selected as part of the recent rounds of Pacific Film and Television’s (PFTC) Write Stuff and Short Black:

Write Stuff
Angela Murphy , from Freshwater in Cairns, is a freelance writer with a background in teaching/education. Her articles and poems have been published in newspapers, magazines and journals and her play, The Boathouse was staged at JUTE ( Cairns) in 2006 and the Darwin Theatre Company. Angela previously received development assistance from PFTC for Snakes in the Cane, about a man’s confrontation with the creepy creatures of far north Queensland.

Sharlene Lea’uanae is a north Queensland writer and a mother of seven who recently won the Monsoon Short Story competition. Her project Tasteless Taro is a translation of a Samoan proverb which means skin without ink and focuses on a chief’s shamed son who leaves his home and culture for a new life in Australia.

James Noble has written numerous short and feature film scripts which have been optioned by producers and the short film Road Kill which was produced in 2005. His new script, Vague Caesar, is an animated short film about how far the Emperor is willing to go to keep up appearances and give the Roman masses what they want.

Short Black
Kym Cameron , originally from the Yamatji people of Western Australia, is now based in west Cairns. Her screenplay, The Other Side, was published in the book West Cairns Stories and is now being developed through Short Black. It features a mix of animation and live action.

Doreen Queary is a writer with five children under the age of six. She originates from the Stradbroke Island Nunuckle people and now lives in Cairns. Her screenplay Kick It Off was published in the book West Cairns Stories and focuses on the impact of domestic violence.

Dean Gibson is an emerging writer-director with experience of the film and television industry through his work as a Director of Photography. His project, The Great Harry, is about an insurance salesman inspired by Harry Houdini.

Applications for the 2007 rounds of PFTC’s short film development and production schemes close in April.
