A seminar developed in response to Arts Queensland's Industry Sector Development Plan 2007- 2009, has identified the importance of audience development and quality public programming to a wide-range of collecting and academic institutions.

Museum & Gallery Services Queensland presented Quality Public Programs - Beyond Visitor Numbers, on 19 November, in partnership with The University of Queensland Art Museum and The University of Queensland's Museum Studies program. An Arts Queensland Strengthening the Sector grant provided financial support for the event.

Topics covered a range of practical and philosophical approaches to developing and facilitating rewarding visitor experiences. Speakers explored creative and innovative strategies to attract diverse audiences.

Guest speaker Lauren Parker, Head of Contemporary Programmes at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, suggested ways in which digital technology may be used to engage visitors with museum objects and architectural spaces and Associate Professor John Armstrong from the University of Melbourne spoke on the importance of aesthetic education (learning to judge works for their artistic value).
