Local artists feature at Institute of Modern Art

Brisbane artists Vernon Ah Kee and Robert MacPherson are showing at the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane, 8 December 2007 – 2 February 2008.

Ah Kee will unveil his critique of white Australian culture with his new project Cantchant, while MacPherson explores internationalism and the language of subcultures in Three Works.

In Cantchant, Ah Kee takes on the iconic subject of the beach and its special role in forming Australian identity. Cantchant pushes aside the commonsense of the beach as a destination for leisure, relaxation and fun, and presents it as a cultural battleground, as seen during the Cronulla riots of 2005.

MacPherson's Three Works includes Popov And The Lost Constructivists (1982-2007), Little Pictures For The Poor (1983-2007) in which MacPherson explores the language of subcultures and Mayfair, Peerless: Ice Cream I May Have Eaten, But Shirts I've Never Worn: For Little E.E.W. (2005-6) which makes a link between colours desirable in ice-cream but not so in shirts.
