Monumental sculpture dedicated to former Gallery Director |
|
Premier Peter Beattie announced the dedication of the Anish Kapoor artwork at the 2007 Queensland Art Gallery Foundation dinner following Hall’s departure from the Gallery in April. Mr Beattie said the work would be a permanent testament to Hall’s 20-year contribution to the Gallery and to Queensland The sculpture was commissioned for the collection by the QAG Board of Trustees to mark the opening of the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) and it was funded by the Foundation. The fibreglass and resin sculpture is the largest contemporary art acquisition in QAG’s history and it will be shown publicly for the first time later this year. The monumental work was created specifically for GoMA and is the first of its kind in an Australian collection. Born in India and now residing in the United Kingdom, Anish Kapoor is only represented in Australian collections by smaller-scale sculptural works and works on paper. He makes a few works each year so his art is in demand around the world. Several of his sculptural works are in the 5th Asia-Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art at QAG and GoMA until May 27.
