Entries sought for New Filmmakers

Aspiring filmmakers have until May 31 to submit entries in two competitions as part of the Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF).

The first is the Queensland New Filmakers Awards (QNFA). In its 21st year, these annual awards recognise, encourage and reward the originality, creativity and technical excellence of Queensland's emerging filmmakers - our next generation of screen masters.

Films will be screened at the Regent Cinemas on August 4 as part of BIFF, with winners announced at a gala awards night on August 11.

Previous QNFA winners have been showcased at national and international film festivals, including the prestigious Cannes Film Festival.

Winners include Ivan Sen, director of Beneath Clouds, which won AFI and IF awards as well as Best Director at the Berlin Film Festival, and Michael and Peter Spierig, who enjoyed international success with their first feature film Undead and are working on their next film Daybreakers.

Filmmakers are also encouraged to enter BIFF’s Fast Film competition. Fast films must be four minutes or less with no resrictions on genre, subject or location but must include a special ingredient each year. This year a magnifying glass must be incorporated into the film.

A panel of judges will shortlist the films and adding an interactive element to the competition the audience can vote for their favourite film.

The short-listed films will be showcased as part of BIFF in the Burbs, a program of 15 free film screenings in south-east Queensland.
