Djumbunji Press, KickArts Fine Art Printmaking Centre
in Cairns, will nurture the extraordinary talents of printmakers in this region, providing Far North Queensland Indigenous artists with the opportunity to generate income, create new work and share their skills.
Djumbunji Press, which officially opened in March 2009, will champion the region’s artists and create new works of art for the national and international market.
Arts Queensland, through the Queensland Government's Backing Indigenous Arts
program, partnered with KickArts and James Cook University to develop Djumbunji Press as a professional facility offering workshops, custom printing and studio space.
Djumbunji Press will also be a supplier for the Cairns Indigenous Art Fair
, another significant component of Backing Indigenous Arts.
Djumbunji is a traditional word of the Gimuy Yidinji people meaning 'belongs to scorpion place' and honours the location of the press in the area of Bunda Djumbunji’s Scorpion Mountain, the traditional name for the Whitfield Mountain range.
