Performers and arts workers from across Queensland gathered at the State Library of Queensland's newly refurbished Indigenous Knowledge Centre, kuril dhagun, to launch Queensland’s first Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Arts Strategy. The strategy aims to articulate a common commitment and vision across the State's arts portfolio to strengthen and promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and cultures.

The 2009 Queensland Music Festival was launched on Thursday Island with The Black Arm Band performing ‘Hidden Republic'. The performance, featuring 25 of Australia's leading singers, songwriters, musicians and performers was backed by 33 members of the Queensland Youth Symphony and beamed into Brisbane's CBD via a live web-cast symbolically linking the furthest tip of the State with its southern capital. The Island audience was estimated at 2,000 while more than 500 fans watched the show in Brisbane's Queen Street Mall.

The inaugural Cairns Indigenous Art Fair (CIAF) was officially opened by the Queensland Premier and Minister for The Arts Anna Bligh on Thursday 20 August 2009. The video includes highlights from her opening speech, a Q&A interview during her tour of the art fair and a performance by the Aurukun Songmen and Dancers who appeared as part of the opening celebrations.

Rainforest artist Michael Boiyool Anning lives in Ravenshoe on the Atherton Tablelands. Winner of the 1996 Wandjuk Marika 3D Memorial Award at the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award, Boiyool's work will be exhibited at Cairns Indigenous Art Fair in August 2009.
