New works set for showcase at the Judith Wright Centre

The Queensland Government has bolstered its support for new and emerging artists with creative development projects to be supported at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts (JWCoCA) through the Queensland Arts Showcase Program, it was announced today.

Minister for the Arts Leeanne Enoch said the new opportunity for creative development projects at JWCoCA reflected the government’s commitment to the creation of new works, a sustainable arts sector in Queensland, and providing audiences with vibrant arts experiences.

“The scope of the Queensland Arts Showcase Program (QASP), established by the Palaszczuk Government in 2015, will be expanded to fund creative development projects at the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts,” Minister Enoch said.

“The new QASP Arts Ignite – JWCoCA stream responds to sector feedback for more opportunities and funding for artists and companies to access creative development and performance spaces at the centre.

“A priority for the Palaszczuk Government is to ensure Queensland’s emerging artists are supported and connected. This will enable them to take some artistic risks and create innovative new works that will add to the state’s cultural vibrancy.”

QASP’s Arts Ignite – JWCoCA will provide funding of up to $40,000 for projects involving the creative development and presentation of new works at the centre, with the program supporting a four-week creative period and optional one-week performance season.

Spokesperson for the Queensland Chamber of Arts and Culture Katherine Hoepper said they welcomed the Minister’s announcement of new funding to support the development of more exciting works in Queensland.

“This new opportunity recognises that artists living and working in Queensland make a vital contribution to our communities, strengthen our culture, and play a key role in the state’s economy,” Ms Hoepper said.

This investment will allow artists to take the essential time they need to create, which will ultimately contribute to a healthier arts sector, for the enjoyment of all Queenslanders.”

Applications are to be assessed by an independent peer panel, which will ensure greater transparency when it comes to the funding.

Additionally, applicants will be required to nominate a creative producer who will support and guide the development of new works.

Applications for QASP Arts Ignite – JWCoCA open today (29 January) and close 12 March 2018.
