CoCA Cairns is a state-of-the-art cultural facility in the heart of the city which houses a 248-seat theatre for performances and film screenings, climate controlled exhibition galleries, artist studio workshop space, office accommodation, Gallery shop and restaurant. CoCA Cairns provides accommodation for resident arts organizations, Just Us Theatre Ensemble (JUTE) and KickArts Contemporary Arts Limited, and offers theatre and exhibition space for local artists.
Opened in February 2004, CoCA Cairns was allocated funding of $2.7 million through the Millennium Arts Regional Program with and additional $1 million allocated through the Smart State Building Fund for stage two works to commence in 2008. Stage two incorporates a rehearsal studio/multipurpose workshop space and will cater for skills development activities by a range of arts organizations and creative enterprises in the region.
