Arts Queensland has partnered with the Australia Council for the Arts to provide joint funding of $900,000 over three years (2010 - 2012) for the Regional Stages initiative.

What is Regional Stages?

Regional Stages aims to enrich local arts practice in regional Queensland.
Under the initiative established producer will be placed in selected regions to develop partnerships between the community, local artists and leading national and international practitioners in order to:

  • create and present high quality contemporary performances;
  • build new partnerships between artists and communities;
  • contribute to niche touring circuits;
  • develop creative work relevant to, or in partnership with local communities; and
  • strengthen artistic practice in regional areas of Queensland.

It is proposed that the regional producers will increase within their communities: participation in performing arts; audiences for performing arts services, presenters and products; partnerships and development initiatives for artists and communities; and the quality and reach of work created in regional Queensland.

Where are the selected regions?

The three regions delivering Regional Stages are:

Bundaberg (Creative Regions, Moncrieff Theatre): www.creativeregions.com.au

Toowoomba (Empire Theatre): www.empiretheatre.com.au

Gold Coast (The Arts Centre): www.theartscentregc.com.au

Key Outcomes

  • A demand-led performing arts culture and high satisfaction with product.
  • Leading practice in creation of diverse, high quality, demand driven performing arts.
  • A culture of partnerships and collaborations between local government, NARPACA, local industry, communities and established creative practitioners.

In 2011, Arts Queensland commissioned John Baylis to undertake detailed case studies of some of the outstanding achievements to date by each of the Regional Stages locations. You can download the case studies here:
