About
Bulmba-ja plays a vital role in the Cairns arts scene, showcasing the unique stories of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Pronounced “BUUM-ba-jar”, the centre's name has a shared meaning of house or place in Yidinji and Yirrganydji languages.
The centre is home to several arts companies, such as JUTE Theatre Company, Miriki Performing Arts, NorthSite Contemporary Arts and The Pryce Centre for Culture and Arts.
Bulmba-ja presents an ambitious and diverse program of exhibitions and events throughout the year. The centre also has multiple spaces for hire - visit the Venues page for more information.
Bulmba-ja opened on 29 February 2020 following a $5.9 million refurbishment as part of a Queensland Government vision to support Far North Queensland (FNQ) arts and culture.
