First Night Showcase - Judith Wright Arts Centre

Supporting independent artists, early career artists and arts organisations based in Queensland to develop and present new works at the Judith Wright Arts Centre, Fortitude Valley

The First Night Showcase Program - Judith Wright Arts Centre aims to support independent artists and organisations to develop and present new visual and performing works at the Judith Wright Arts Centre (JWAC) between 1 January 2021 to 31 December 2021.

The program is part of the Queensland Government's Arts and Cultural Recovery Package of $22.5 million over two years to stabilise Queensland’s arts companies, secure employment for artists and arts workers and deliver COVID-safe cultural experiences for Queensland audiences.

Outcomes

First Night Showcase Judith Wright Arts Centre will support 11 projects with funding of $295 332 for independent artists and organisations based in Queensland to develop and present new visual and performing works at Judith Wright Arts Centre (JWAC).

  • Outer Space Artist Run Initiative $25,000 - Queensland artists moving image program visual arts
  • Topology $25,000 - The War Artist music
  • Aha Ensemble $24,310 - Assemble theatre
  • SugarRush Music $29,032 - Come into My World contemporary music
  • Ms Ashleigh Musk $29,290 - Re-model future practice now: A collaborative residency dance
  • Western-Dyer Productions $28,661 - Dirty Fame Flash Candles Club theatre
  • Bridie Hooper $19,037 - Ingress circus/physical theatre

 

Information about the fund

Objectives

  • Champion the development and presentation of Queensland independent artists, early career artists and arts organisations
  • Support strong engagement and collaboration between independent artists and/or early career artists and arts organisations
  • Support the arts and cultural sector to activate and shape JWAC spaces and programs
  • Provide a safe, inclusive centre for community members to meet, collaborate and share Queensland stories. 

 

Funding available

Up to $30 000 cash funding and JWAC in-kind venue support of up to $40 000

Applicants who are located more than 100kms from the Brisbane CBD can apply for up to an additional $7000 to cover travel and accommodation costs.

 

Eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

  • be based in Queensland
  • be able to present proposed activity at JWAC between 1 January 2021 and 31 December 2021.

Expression of interest submission process

The First Night Showcase at JWAC EOI’s opened on 11 August 2020 and closed at 4pm 8 September 2020.

  1. Contact with Centre Management by no later than 25 August 2020, on telephone 3872 9000 or email jwac@arts.qld.gov.au to confirm venue availability and obtain quotes for in-kind support and hard costs for their project budget. 
  2. Submit your EOI online  by 4pm AEST 8 September 2020.
  3. An external peer assessment panel will assess your EOI against the assessment criteria.
  4. Applicants will be notified in October 2020.
