Queensland Writers Fellowships 2026 FAQs
On this page
These FAQs support general queries or clarifications in relation to the Queensland Writers Fellowships (QWF). These will be updated in response to any key queries Arts Queensland receives in relation to this funding opportunity.
If this document does not address your specific query, please email investment@arts.qld.gov.au and request for a member of the grants team to contact you.
These FAQs must be read together with the specific Queensland Writers Fellowships guidelines. Key terms used in these and the General Guidelines are defined in the glossary.
Arts Queensland will consider what ‘a reasonable person’ would determine to be unacceptable conduct, behaviour or activity by a recipient of public funding.
In addition, Arts Queensland will consider any financial and operational risks in allocating funding and managing funding agreements.
For example:
1. Where the Court, or a reasonable person, considers behaviour to not be acceptable conduct by a recipient of public monies such as charges related to integrity, misappropriation of monies or paying employee entitlements, or hate speech. This could include posting, sharing or liking social media content created by others that fits the above descriptions of hateful or discriminatory behaviour or speech.
2. Media or funding campaigns that indicate the applicant may not be a going concern, is considering closing, is facing bankruptcy or gone into liquidation.
3. The loss of a premises or planned industrial action that may mean activity won’t go ahead.
1. Can I apply if I don’t have an ABN?
If you don’t have an ABN and you are successful, you will need to fill in a ‘Statement by supplier’ declaration to receive funding.
The name under which you apply must match the name on the bank account we pay your funding into.
2. Can I apply for different writing projects in the same round?
You may only apply once to the round.
3. I have upcoming reports due for Arts Queensland grants – do I need to complete this reporting before I submit my application?
If reporting is due after the fund closing date it does not have to be completed when you apply. However, if you are recommended for funding but have overdue reporting when you are notified of success, you will need to complete outstanding reporting before your funding agreement is issued and your first payment made.
If you are the owner or Director of an organisation that has overdue reporting, you may also be ineligible to apply, even if that application was made under a different ABN.
Please contact Arts Queensland if you think that may apply to you.
4. Can I apply for a Queensland Writers Fellowship if I am already receiving funding through another Arts Queensland funding stream?
Yes. You can apply if you have previously received, or are currently receiving project funding from Arts Queensland, provided you meet all other eligibility criteria.
However, you cannot apply if you have already received funding for the same activity through a different fund.
5. If I was born in Queensland, but am not currently based Queensland, can I still apply?
To be eligible you must have a residential address in Queensland and be able to provide proof that it is your main place of residence, e.g., a copy of your driver’s license, bank statements or utilities bills for the property.
1. I want to use the fellowship to write a film/TV script. Will this be eligible?
The Fund will not support writing projects where the immediate or longer-term objective is for the work to be produced for cinema, TV or digital content channels.
1. Can I apply for 100% of the costs of my writing project and professional development?
There is no need for applicants to have any additional income or co-contribution in their budget. However, if your total costs are higher than the maximum project ($20,000) or professional development amounts ($4,500), you must show how the remaining costs will be met. This could be through other grants or your own cash or fundraising.
1. In what instances should I provide evidence of consultation with, or support from individuals, communities or groups?
If your writing project will tell the stories of a real person or community, you should provide evidence (email, letter, video) that the individual, their estate (if no longer living), or in the case of communities, a community member or organisation with authority, gives permission for you to tell the story.
If you are an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander person with the cultural authority to use the Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) described in your application, please state this in your project description in the ‘Other information’ section of the application.
The eligibility guidance is not legal advice. We recommend you speak to Arts Law for advice relating to Intellectual Property or ICIP.
