In 2007 Arts Minister Rod Welford launched the new art+place Public Art Fund that will devote $12 million to new public art projects in Queensland over 2008–10.
The Fund will build on Queensland's reputation as a leader in public art and encourage the creation of better public spaces across the state.
A curatorial panel of experts has been established and a new Government Curator art+place appointed to advise the Government on the expenditure of the Fund.
The new Fund was the key recommendation to the Government following an independent evaluation of the Art Built-In policy by Professor Michael Keniger in 2005–06. See the Keniger report (PDF 2148KB).
The Fund will bring focus and rigour to the commissioning of significant public art and can be accessed by Queensland Government departments and agencies. It also allows Arts Queensland to extend assistance for public art projects to Queensland local government councils, not-for-profit arts and cultural organisations, arts and cultural festivals and private developers.
