Visual Arts, Craft and Design Sector Development Plan (PDF 1388KB)

The visual arts, craft and design sectors in Queensland have shown significant growth in the number of practitioners and professional opportunities as Queensland develops a reputation as a creative, innovative centre in the Asia–Pacific region. The injection of over $7.4M in Queensland Government and Commonwealth funding from 2003/04 to 2006/07 under the Visual Arts, Craft and Design Strategy has boosted the vibrancy and sustainability of the sector.

Our regional and institutional galleries are employing best-practice museum standards, strengthening their engagement with diverse audiences and presenting some of the state's nationally significant projects. Writing and publishing activities continue to profile and critically examine the work of both emerging and established artists.

Initiatives

  • Smart State Designer of the Year – an annual award, sponsored by Arts Queensland, recognising the work and talent of Queensland designers
  • Design Centre – the 2007–08 State Budget allocated $1 million to the planning of a design centre in Brisbane.
  • Visual Arts Craft Strategy (VACS) – The State Government and the Australian Government are equal partners in a funding initiative for Queensland's contemporary visual arts and craft sector.
