Three schools in the Ipswich Moreton region welcomed four artists for intensive eight-week arts experiences for children. Teachers and artists combined their knowledge and skills to provide new learning experiences for students at Kruger State School, Raceview State School and Leichhardt State School.
The development, implementation and evaluation of the project was led by Lee FullARTon, Project Manager for the Creative Community Hub Artist in Residence Pilot, and the Primary Arts Network Ipswich.
An evaluation of the project was undertaken with the University of Southern Queensland Springfield and Griffith University.
Benefits included participating artists having a better understanding of what it means to work in schools and what to expect for future projects whilst teachers took away ideas for changing their teaching practice, including embedding the arts in other key learning areas such as literacy and enhancing group and conflict resolution skills. Also, teachers created packages for the Queensland Studies Authority's Assessment Bank which provides assessment tools based on the residencies.
Also, a framework for children and young people's creativity in Ipswich has been developed to stimulate discussion and ideas about arts and education in the region.
In 2009 the Queensland Theatre Company (external site) managed a nine week Indigenous artist in residency project in south-west Queensland and worked with Charleville State School, Charleville State High School and Cunnamulla State School.
The project aimed to demonstrate the value of embedding the arts across the curriculum particularly in addressing attendance, retention and school completion for Indigenous students. It also included professional development opportunities to help teachers use the Arts Essential Learnings within the Queensland Curriculum Assessment and Reporting (QCAR) framework.
Teachers, artists and students from all over Queensland can benefit from this Indigenous artist in residence education project through the documentation of an arts-led model of student engagement, and the production of a DVD resource.
