About us

Named after Judith Wright, the celebrated Australian poet and activist, the Judith Wright Arts Centre (JWAC) is a vibrant and contemporary visual and performing arts hub, located in the heart of Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley.Judith Wright Centre Brisbane street view

Home to some of Queensland’s and Australia’s most dynamic arts organisations, JWAC is a creative space for exciting visual arts programming and for the development and presentation of original and innovative contemporary performance works, including cabaret, circus, dance, music, spoken word and multi-disciplinary arts.

Arts Queensland supports creative development at JWAC through the new First Night Showcase program for independent artists, early career artists and arts organisations based in Queensland to develop and present new works at JWAC

JWAC tenants include Aboriginal Centre for the Performing Arts, Anywhere Festival, arTour, AusDance Queensland, Australasian Dance Collective, BlakDance, Carbon Creative, Circa, Creative Partnerships Australia, Flying Arts Alliance, Institute of Modern Art (IMA), Musica Viva, Outer Space and The Little Red Company.

Opened in 2001, JWAC is owned and operated by the Queensland Government and managed by Arts Queensland. Learn more about the history of JWAC

In 2018, the centre underwent a redevelopment. The refurbishment includes a new gallery space, an updated entry and facade incorporating night-time digital art projections, a new foyer layout with fitout and finishes, new offices and more spaces for tenants, artists and arts workers to meet and come together.

The refurbishment was carried out through the Queensland Government’s Arts Infrastructure Investment Fund, which provides $17.5 million over four years (2017-18 to 2020-21) to revitalise state-owned assets to generate cultural and economic benefits.

The corner gallery, which opened in 2019 as part of the redevelopment, features the work of new and established Queensland artists.
