Institute of Modern Art (IMA)

The Institute of Modern Art (IMA) is one of Australia’s oldest independent art galleries, and its history coincides with the development of contemporary art in this country. Its original mission from 1975 was to foster research and experimentation by Australian and international artists through exhibitions and publishing, and to educate the public about contemporary art. For over forty years, the IMA has presented more than 500 exhibitions and supported over 2000 artists.

The IMA is a non-collecting institution, presenting an ambitious program of exhibitions that concentrate on new commissions by Australian and international artists at pivotal points in their practices. The IMA has a longstanding commitment to research and a rich history of publishing artist monographs and critical readers, together with a vibrant program of free events, workshops, and talks.

The IMA is principally supported by Australia Council for the Arts and Arts Queensland, and is a member of Contemporary Art Organisations Australia (CAOs).
